De behandeling van gespannen ascites, d.w.z. het gevoel van de buik als gevolg van verhoogde druk, bestaat uit:
- therapeutische paracentese van 4-6 liter
- plasmavolume-expansie met albumine wordt door velen gebruikt op hetzelfde moment als therapeutische paracentese
- Verdere behandeling is dan als voor niet-tense ascites
