The haematological manifestations of rheumatoid arthritis include:

  • marrow depression, usually due to folate deficiency
  • anaemia of chronic disease
  • Coomb's +ve haemolytic anaemia
  • hyperviscosity
  • thrombocytosis in active disease but may be thrombocytopaenia if marrow suppression by drug treatment
  • leukocytosis; may be leukopaenia in Felty's syndrome
