Examination of the eyes
The eyes in thyroid disease is a subject much beloved of examiners, as there are many possible signs, including:
- exophthalmos
- lid retraction
- lid lag
- exophthalmic ophthalmoplegia
- the exophthalmos may cause the patient to sleep at night with their eyes open, which results in increased susceptibility to conjunctivitis, corneal abrasion, and chemosis.
