Microtia

Authoring team

Microtia is congenital deformity of the pinna. It may range from a minor abnormality to complete absence of the pinna, often with absence of the ear canal and middle ear.

The inner ear however, is often normal as it has different embryological origins, and this allows hearing to be salvaged, in those with bilateral abnormalities, using bone anchored hearing aids. Osteointegrated prosthetic pinnae may then be used, to give a cosmetically acceptable outcome.

Such pinna and middle ear abnormalities occur in Treacher Collins syndrome.
