Aetiology of haematemesis in children
Causes include:
- swallowed foreign body
- hiatus hernia
- oesophageal varices
- gastritis and peptic ulceration
- pyloric stenosis
- bleeding diatheses, including thrombocytopaenia, haemophilia
Always in children an index of suspicion must be maintained for Munchausen by proxy.
