The causes of mechanical intestinal obstruction can be broadly divided into:

  • those within the lumen
  • those in the bowel wall
  • those outside the lumen

Causes vary with respect to site of obstruction, e.g. a stricture caused by ulcerative colitis is not a cause of small bowel obstruction.
