There is a direct relationship between the number of axillary lymph nodes involved with metastatic breast cancer and prognosis:

  • no nodal involvement: 5 year survival >80%
  • 1-2 nodes involved: approximately 58%
  • 5-6 nodes involved: approximately 45%
  • >10 nodes involved: 5 year survival <30%
