Synthesis

Authoring team

Enzyme synthesis may be influenced by a number of factors:

  • normal growth e.g. bone-derived alkaline phosphatase increases during the pubertal growth spurt
  • genetic deficiency e.g. inborn errors of metabolism
  • pathology e.g. biliary obstruction increases hepatic alkaline phosphatase production
  • drug action e.g. hepatic microsomal enzyme inhibitors and inducers
