Diagnosis
Infection of the fetus occurs in utero. A baby suspected of having been infected should be followed up for 6 months.
Serology is confusing as an infected child may be seronegative at birth. Similarly non-infected children may be seropositive due to maternal antibodies.
Persisting or increasing titres suggest infection.
Investigation should include:
- clinical examination
- serology
- CSF examination
- long bone radiology
- haemoglobin and liver function tests
- urinalysis
