Indications for counselling

Authoring team

Counselling is indicated if the patient is faced with making a major decision or coming to terms with a major life event - usually in the context of interpersonal crisis.

Medical examples where counselling may be appropriate include patients who have had a limb amputated or a patient facing a decision about whether a pregnancy should be terminated when there is a risk of the child having some genetic disorder.

Non-medical examples might include a person who is requiring to make a choice about their future career or preparations for retirement.
