Differential diagnosis
Conditions with similar signs to limb girdle dystrophy include:
- some chronic spinal muscular atrophies may show an identical distribution of proximal muscle weakness and may be differentiated only on the EMG and muscle biopsy
- polymyositis and dermatomyositis
- certain metabolic myopathies e.g. adult-onset acid maltase deficiency
- facio-scapulo-humeral dystrophy
- Becker and Duchenne muscular dystrophy
