The causes of microangiopathic haemolysis include:

  • disseminated intravascular coagulation - microthrombi narrow the microvasculature
  • thrombotic thrombocytopaenic purpura - microthrombi narrow the microvasculature
  • haemolytic uraemic syndrome - microthrombi narrow the microvasculature
  • malignant hypertension - arterioles become markedly narrowed
  • systemic lupus erythematosus - red cells are damaged by the necrotizing arteriolitis
  • Kasabach-Merritt syndrome
  • paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria
