Regular supervision and periodic reassessment of patients with conditions such as hypertension, diabetes and epilepsy allows:
- therapy to be reviewed
- compliance to be checked
- complications to be ancicipated or identified at an early and remediable stage
- continuity of care, preferable in general practice to seeing a different junior hospital doctor at each visit to the outpatients' department
- encouraging a lifestyle likely to produce the best outcome
- continuing psychological support to help the patient cope with any permanent disability
