Observation is an important part of general practice. It requires the doctor to instigate follow-up and the patient to agree to it and take responsibilty for seeing that it happens. A good GP must get the right balance between responsive and anticipatory care while respecting the patient's autonomy.

The GP requires a strategy which allows appropriate follow-up of the three types of morbidity seen:

  • minor,self-limiting conditions 60%
  • acute, major, life-threatening of GP conditions 15% workload
  • chronic,incurable problems 25%
