These are divided into functional and neoplastic. In women of reproductive age, the vast majority of non-inflammatory ovarian masses are functional - 70% - with neoplastic tumours - 20% - and endometriomas - 10% - accounting for the remainder.

In the post-menopausal woman, about half of ovarian tumours will be malignant, whilst in children, the figure is 10%.
