Whole blood is rarely used nowadays. Blood component therapy has replaced the use of whole blood (1).

Blood components include:

  • red cells
    • red cells in additive solutions
    • irradiated red cells
    • washed red cells
  • platelets
    • irradiated platelets
    • platelets in additive solutions
    • human leucocyte antigen (HLA)-selected platelets
  • plasma
    • fresh frozen plasma
  • cryoprecipitate
  • granulocytes
  • human albumin solutions
  • clotting factor concentrates
  • immunoglobulin solutions (1)

Note:

  • all blood donations are filtered to remove white blood cells (pre-storage leucodepletion) to leave <1×10 6 leucocytes in the pack
