Presentation in children

Authoring team

The child presents with:

  • pain
  • malaise
  • fever
  • septicaemia, if the presentation is late

There may be a recent history of localised sepsis, for example a boil.

The child will refuse to use a limb:

  • touching or moving the adjacent joint is impossible
  • there is local redness, warmth and oedema
