Intravenous immunoglobulin

Intravenous normal immunoglobulin is prepared from pools of at least 1000 blood donations.

Dosage is according to body weight. A course of 0.4 g/kg/day for five days is typical. Product literature should be consulted for details.

Normal immunoglobulin is used for:

  • passive immunisations against:
    • hepatitis A
    • measles
    • rubella

  • gammaglobulin replacement:
    • congenital agammaglobulinaemia
    • hypogammaglobulinaemia
    • post-bone marrow transplant to prevent infection

  • in the treatment of:
    • idiopathic thrombocytopaenic purpura
    • Kawasaki syndrome
    • Guillain-Barre syndrome
    • multifocal motorneuropathy with conduction block
    • multiple sclerosis
