Hand infections are classified according to the area, tissue and organism involved. They include:
- paronychia
- subungual infections: usually extension of paronychia
- distal pulp space infection - felon
- cellulitis
- osteomyelitis
- collar stud abscess
- tendon sheath infection
- web space infection
- palmar space infections: mid-palmar, thenar and hypothenar
- penetrating injuries of hand including bite injuries
- infection secondary to foreign body
- radial and ulnar bursa infection
- mycobacterial infection
- nail infections
