The mitochondrion has two membranes. The outer membrane is relatively permeable to small molecules. The inner membrane is more selective. It has specific protein transporters for a number of substances including:

  • tricarboxylic acid cycle intermediates
  • fatty acids
  • adenine nucleotides
  • NADH
