Extradural causes

The causes of spinal cord compression which arise within the vertebral canal but outside the dura include:

  • neoplasia: lymphoma, leukaemic infiltrate, metastases
  • extradural abscess: e.g. as part of a staphylococcal septicaemia causing acute vertebral osteitis and subsequent vertebral collapse
  • extradural cyst
