Significant signs in infants
- reduced muscle tone
- dehydration (tachycardia, dry mouth, reduced skin turgor and sunken fontanelle are late signs)
- reduced response to stimuli
- tachypnoea, marked rib recession or grunting
- reduced capillary return
- rectal temperature >38.5 degrees centigrade
- marked pallor
