Malignant disease of the eyelids
The major eyelid malignancies are:
- basal cell carcinoma (rodent ulcer)
- this is the commonest eyelid malignancy
- the tumour usually has rolled edges
- commoner in pale individuals who have been exposed to sun for many years
- progression is slow and invasion is local
- treatment involves local excision
- squamous cell carcinoma (epithelioma)
- this is more aggressive and requires wide excision
