Angiotensin converting enzyme is a naturally occuring enzyme, widespread in tissues but most abundant in the lungs. It is membrane-bound and catalyses the conversion of angiotensin I to angiontensin II.
Its pharmacological manipulation with inhibitors has become very important in cardiac failure. In addition, its concentration may be raised in some disease processes.
Angiotensin is also important for the inactivation of bradykinin.
