Midbrain anatomy
- traversed by the aqueduct that joins the third and fourth ventricles
- cranial nerve nuclei:
- oculomotor nerve and Edinger - Westphal nuclei - at level of superior colliculus; third nerve emerges from the ventral aspect of the midbrain (between the cerebral peduncles)
- trochlear nerve - at the level of the inferior colliculus; emerges dorsally
- other relations in the midbrain:
- red nucleus - in the midbrain at level of superior colliculi
- substantia nigra - lies immediately behind the cerebral peduncles of the midbrain
