The middle constrictor muscle is one of the paired external muscles of the pharynx. It surrounds the inferior border of the superior constrictor that lies superiorly. Its inferior border is surrounded by the superior part of the inferior constrictor.
It arises from the inferior part of the stylohyoid ligament, its junction with the lesser cornu of the hyoid bone and the adjacent area along the greater cornu.
Its fibres pass around the pharynx to insert into the median raphe on the latter's posterior surface.
The middle constrictor is supplied by the pharyngeal plexus of nerve fibres.
Its action is to constrict the wall of the pharynx during swallowing.
