The middle constrictor of the pharynx has the following relations:

  • superiorly: superior constrictor; the space between the superior and middle constrictor is traversed by the:
    • stylopharyngeus muscle
    • glossopharyngeal nerve (IX)
    • styloglossus muscle
    • lingual nerve
    • lingual artery
    • hypoglossal nerve (XII)
  • inferiorly and anteriorly:
    • hyoid bone
    • thyrohyoid membrane
  • inferiorly and posteriorly: inferior constrictor; the space between the middle and inferior constrictor is traversed by the:
    • internal laryngeal nerve
    • superior laryngeal artery
    • superior laryngeal vein
  • posteriorly: fascia overlying vertebral bodies
  • laterally: hyoglossus
