To make a diagnosis:

  • generate a working diagnosis or identify the problem

  • look for discriminating physical signs to help confirm or refute the working diagnosis

  • interpret the information obtained from patient records, history, examination and investigations

  • apply the basic, behavioural and clinical sciences to identifying, solving and managing the patient's problems

  • bear in mind one's own limits of competence and act appropriately
