Aetiology
Causes of small bowel obstruction can be divided into:
- dynamic:
- mechanical causes obstructing lumen:
- tumours
- intussusception
- gallstone ileus
- impacted faeces
- meconium
- bezoars
- intrinsic lesions of the bowel wall:
- strictures, congenital, inflammatory, neoplastic, etc.
- extrinsic lesions:
- postoperative adhesions
- inflammation
- herniae
- neoplastic masses
- abscesses
- volvulus
- mechanical causes obstructing lumen:
- adynamic - lack of peristalsis:
- paralytic ileus
- mesenteric vascular occlusion
