Modification of Th1 lymphocytes activation

Th1 T helper lymphocytes are proinflammatory. Altering the balance towards immunomodulatory Th2 lymphocytes may be beneficial.

Accepted treatments which are thought to act in this way include:

  • corticosteroids
  • interferon beta
  • intravenous immunoglobulin

Experimental approaches include:

  • oral myelin
  • neutralising monoclonal antibodies to:
    • TNF-alpha & TNF receptors
    • IL-1 & soluble IL-2
  • matrix metalloproteinase inhibitors
  • TGF-beta and IL-10
