Malformations associated with maternal diabetes
It is important to note that the risk of malformation is not necessarily linked to the control of the diabetes; however the sensitivity may be maximal in the first timester.
Malformations include:
- caudal regression sequence
- congenital heart disease; principally ventricular septal defect, coarctation of the aorta and transposition of the great arteries.
- congenital microcolon
- the ears may be hairy; this is of no clinical significance
